Prediction of Agglomerate Type during Scale-Up of a Batch Crystallization Using Computational Fluid Dynamics Models

This publication investigated the use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models during scale-up of a batch crystallization. Specifically, the impact of hydrodynamics on agglomeration during the crystallization of an API was studied. The type of agglomerate formed correlated with agitation level at the laboratory and kilogram-lab scales. Crystallization conditions are predicted for pilot-plant- and commercial-scale processes.
