How does the dissolution of Vcaps® Plus capsules compare with gelatin?

Gelatin has been the choice for immediate release formulations for more than 100 years. It opens quickly and is completely dissolved in 20 to 30 minutes. Vcaps® Plus capsules, made from HPMC, need a hydration period in order to pull water into the matrix to allow disintegration to begin. Gelatin, already containing 12-16% water, does not need that same hydration period. The initial lag of 3 to 5 minutes is a phenomenon that occurs in all commercially available HPMC capsules, either first or second generation. But Vcaps Plus capsules still meet the USP standards for an immediate release formulation.
